A 2022 report by the international human rights organization Human Rights Watch states that many citizens were seriously injured and some died as a result of the use of excessive force by law enforcement officers to disperse protesters during demonstrations that took place in the city of Nukus on July 1-2, 2022. The report also noted that more than 500 people were arrested during the demonstrations, and it is not known how many of them are in custody at the time of writing.
