The Ombudsman Takes Control Over the Death of a Convict in Almalyk Colony
A report titled "The Body of a Convict Was Carried Out of the Colony in Almalyk" was circulated on social media. In the report, the deceased's mother stated that she had met with her son during a long visit from January 26 to 28 of this year, and he had not complained about his health.

This incident has been taken under control by the Commissioner of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan for Human Rights (Ombudsman), and all relevant information is currently being reviewed.

According to information provided by the duty unit of Penal Colony No. 14, on February 14 of this year, at 22:45, a convict serving his sentence approached the colony’s doctors due to health-related discomfort. As his condition did not improve after receiving first aid, he was hospitalized in the central hospital of Almalyk.

However, despite the medical assistance provided, the convict passed away on February 15 at 01:00 in the hospital due to hypertension and primary heart failure.

According to the information received, a forensic medical examination has been appointed for the deceased.

Currently, the case is being examined on-site by Ombudsman’s staff and the regional representative for Tashkent region. Additionally, the regional representative for Fergana region met with the deceased’s family members and extended condolences.

The Ombudsman has submitted an appeal to the General Prosecutor’s Office of the Republic of Uzbekistan regarding this case.

The Ombudsman urges that during the preliminary investigation, this incident should be thoroughly, comprehensively, and impartially investigated.
