During the conversation, an exchange of views took place on the conditions created for voters in the elections of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan in 2021, and the role of the Ombudsman in ensuring the political rights of voters.
It is noted that during the last elections, the Ombudsman and the Regional Representatives of the Ombudsman, together with representatives of civil society, conducted a number of monitoring visits and made recommendations to members of polling stations on creating the necessary additional conditions for voting for people with disabilities.
The Ombudsman also studied the conditions created in the polling stations, organized in penitentiary institutions, so that prisoners and convicts who have the right to vote can exercise their right without any restrictions.
It was also noted at the meeting that within the framework of the National Preventive Mechanism for the Prevention of Torture under the Ombudsman, closed institutions are being monitored by public groups with the involvement of civil society institutions and the media.
During the conversation, an exchange of views took place on the recommendations put forward in the final report of the ODIHR mission to observe the elections of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan. During the conversation, the guests noted that these recommendations play an important role in adapting the electoral legislation of Uzbekistan and the procedure for its organization to international best practices.
Eoghan Murphy, Head of Delegation, Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (OSCE ODIHR)
- The Bureau for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, which oversaw the processes of last year's presidential elections in Uzbekistan, published its report in April, which includes 24 recommendations. These are only recommendations. It is up to each state to decide whether or not to take them into account. On the basis of the government proposal, a joint discussion of our recommendations is envisaged during our visit to Uzbekistan. During our meeting, we also exchanged views on the activities of the Ombudsman institution, its participation in electoral processes, and the creation of conditions for ensuring the right to vote for every citizen.
Of course, we are glad that our recommendations are taken into account. We are ready to continue cooperation in the future.
The meeting also discussed issues of strengthening cooperation
