The event opened with opening remarks by Foziljon Otakhanov, Director of the Institute for Legal Problems and Parliamentary Studies at the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Feruza Eshmatova, the Authorized Person of the Oliy Majlis for Human Rights (Ombudsman) and Stephen Nix Eurasia Senior Regional Director overseeing programs in Central Asia, Russia, the Caucasus, Belarus, and Ukraine IRI.
At the round table, the participants of the event were informed about the reforms carried out in our country in recent years, in particular, about the constitutional reforms and the participation of our citizens and representatives of civil society in them.
Former US Congressman Peter Roskam praised Uzbekistan's efforts to carry out constitutional reforms. In his speech, he cited the example of the "Declaration of Independence of the United States of America," developed by the American politician and diplomat, the third president of the United States, Thomas Jefferson, and noted that its development also required a certain amount of time.
He also touched on the US experience of citizen participation in constitutional reforms.
During the visit, representatives of the International Republican Institute IRI of the United States also met with the Authorized Person of the Oliy Majlis for Human Rights (Ombudsman) and representatives of the Institute for Legislative Problems and Parliamentary Studies at the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan. During the meeting, the project "Roadmap" proposed by the International Republican Institute aimed at establishing cooperation was discussed.
During the meeting, the guests were familiarized with the main activities of the Institute of Ombudsman, including working with appeals, cooperation with civil society institutions, monitoring visits to closed institutions with limited freedom of movement, international cooperation.
Representatives of the International Republican Institute noted their readiness to support the Institute of Ombudsman.
At the same time, representatives of the International Republican Institute announced plans to register and open a representative office in the Republic of Uzbekistan.
The meeting was held in an atmosphere of constructive communication, mutual understanding and friendly attitude.
