Senate Committee discussed a new version of the law regulating the Ombudsman’s activities
On October 8 of this year, the Senate Committee on Judicial and Legal Affairs and Anti-Corruption reviewed the law "On the Authorized Person of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan for Human Rights (Ombudsman)." The new law consists of 8 chapters and 57 articles and is developed based on presidential decrees and resolutions, as well as the updated Constitution. In contrast, the previous law contained 22 articles and several additional clauses.

The new law includes several changes aimed at more comprehensive protection and strengthening of citizens' rights and freedoms in our country. Specifically, it grants the Ombudsman the right to propose legislative initiatives to the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan. It also establishes the legal framework for public groups under the Ombudsman to detect and prevent cases of torture, ensures the ongoing participation of the Ombudsman’s regional representatives in activities and monitoring visits in the regions, and includes other provisions.

To clearly define the Ombudsman’s measures, the types of actions (warning, presentation, petition, and demand) are set out in a separate chapter with distinct articles. During the discussion, senators noted that the adoption of this law would enhance the significance of the Ombudsman institution as an independent National Institution, improve the institutional framework of the Ombudsman’s activities, and expand its powers in ensuring human rights and freedoms, as well as its involvement in regional matters.

Following the meeting, the committee made the appropriate decisions on the issues discussed.
