The role of national human rights institutions in ensuring human rights in climate change processes

On October 2-3, 2024, the Ombudsman of the Republic of Azerbaijan held an International Conference on “Climate Change and Human Rights: the Role of Ombudsman and National Human Rights Institutions” in Baku. During open dialogues and receptions of citizens in Syrdarya region, many appeals were received on recognition of rights to arbitrarily occupied land plots. Based on this, on August 26, 2024, another event “School of Ombudsman” was held in secondary general education school No. 3 in Gulistan district of Syrdarya region.

On 31 July 2024, a round table was held in the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis to discuss with the public the draft Human Rights Ombudsman Act. The bill was discussed in detail with the participation of deputies of the Legislative Chamber, the Authorized Person of the Oliy Majlis for Human Rights (Ombudsman), the Children's Ombudsman, representatives of State bodies and institutions, members of the working group drafting the bill, as well as representatives of non-governmental non-profit organizations, other civil society institutions and the media.
